History of music videos

The invention of music videos came with the introduction of film and cinema. The music industry quickly jumped on the idea of merging moving image with sound to create a visual narrative that portrays the lyrics within the song. The first music videos were produced in the 20's where by the Jazz musicians would be filmed performing and this would be used as the music video. However as technology evolved music videos became more visually interesting and have now become works of art which all sorts of editing and special effects. Some artists have become known for their performance in music videos such as Michael Jackson, his dancing and performance in his 'Thriller' and 'Billie Jean' music videos greatly influenced his success.

Song Change

After brain storming about a music video song we finally picked "hurt" however after doing the animatics and listening to the song over and over plus trying to choreograph to it we felt as if the song wasn't good enough therefore changed it to "love in the dark".

24/11/16

·      Today I and Tyrell stayed behind to edit, while on final cut pro I found a tool where you can change the colour of the footage and as I said in previous blogs that I want the colour scheme of this project to have red in it due to the connotation of love. The footage of me singing to the camera has a filter over the top making it red; it works really well and connects with the love theme.

Inspiration for a scene

This Britain's Got Talent performance was my idea inspiration for the silhouette scene in our potential music video.

Settings ideas

1st Section - Dancing

  • Drama Black room
  • Fitness room in PE department but with a black screen behind
  • My dance studio at my dance school
  • Park
2nd Section - Silhouette

3rd Section - Shots of me
  • Black drama room
  • Park
  • In my bedroom

Music Video Idea

Me, Tyrell and Danny have picked our final music video idea and from now on are planning to film based on this idea. Our idea is split into 3 sections , 1 being me dancing in a studio with camera shots such as panning plus using equitment such as the dolly. 2nd section being a siloute scene explaining the narrative of our music video which is a breakup of a girl and boy, then the 3rd section being shots of my face and body standing singing to the camera.

Filming of the dancing

·      Today we done filming of me dancing, I wore my leotard, tights and white shirt and we filmed in the drama studio. As Tyrell set up the camera i played around with the lights, getting the correct lights on so I am visible in the camera and to create a good setting and mood for the filming.

Alicia Keys research

Alicia Keys

Alicia Augello Cook know as Alicia Keys is the final artist I will be referring to that is linked to our own artist identity for this coursework. She was born 25th January 1981 in Manhattan, with her first solo song being released in 2001 "fallin" earned 5 Grammy awards in 2002 who was then the second ever American artist to win 5 Grammys in one night and "fallin" won song of the year.

Alicia keys is a know R&B, Pop, jazz and hip-hop styled artist and has released many hits over her career, she incorporates piano in the majority of her songs as her voice suits this along with her common music inspirations being about love, heartbreak or female empowerment. She mixes classical piano with more popular genres such as R&B and pop into her music and it works extremely well as we can tell by her hit songs and won awards

Christina Aguilera research

Christina Aguilera

Christina Aguilera is known for being her sassy, confident sexy individual who don't only sing but acts an dances as well. Shes starred in her own film called "Burlesque" as a dancer who wanted to get away from her diner girl life and make it as a dancer/singer, the film was a huge hit all around the world as boosted her fame even more.

Her songs range from emotional to fun styled music, her voice is unique and it lets her sing in all styles which is why shes released so many song styles and is hard to describe her music style. Her first song was "Genie In a Bottle" which brought her into the music world as it was a huge hit in the 90s, however she is known for producing some sexually charged songs such as "Dirrty" and "Lady Marmalade" . but as i said she produced sad songs, fun songs, sexy songs all types of themes but it works with her as shes a woman of many talents.

setting for filming

The choice of setting was my idea I had thought of my dance studios, the drama room and the fitness room, the reasons as to why I thought of these places was…
  • My dance studios- it’s a dance studio therefore connects with the idea of our music video, it’s a beautiful studio and will make the video that much better by me being in a real studio. However the problem was that 1 it’s in Dartford therefore time is an issue as we would have to get there during the day when were meant to be in school 2 the availability was very limited, it didn’t fit in with our timetable so we had to eliminate this option.
  • Drama room – this is on the school premises therefore were able to get there and use it whenever without travelling, it has lighting board and is available whenever we wanted if we booked it out.
  • Fitness room – I thought of this place as it’s also within school so it’s easy to get to when we have media and need to film, it has a mirrored wall and I loved this as an idea to have me dance with the mirrored image of myself, I thought it would be a really camera shot. Only issue was that the room was a greeny blue colour and it wouldn’t of looked right filming with that in the background, even though we thought of ways around it we knew it wouldn’t work.

We decided with the drama room as its available, has adjustable lights, it’s a big space, looks good on camera and will make the music video look somewhat real.

Adele Reserach

Adele

Adele is best known for producing emotional yet relatable songs about relationships, her songs are always massive hits such as "Hello" and "Someone like you". However over the years she's released huge hit songs leading her to fame, her unique singing voice and style of music is loved by many which equals her success over the years.

I have chosen Adele as a music artist example as her music style fits in well with our ideas for the music video itself, its not just the backing track we like its the style and lyrics as well, the lyrics tell a story in every song of hers and our idea is for our music video to portray a message as well.

Chosen Genre

My chosen genre for my music video is Pop, the reason i have chosen pop as the genre is because the style and ideas i have for the music video itself goes well with the majority of pop songs. As i researched into songs and genres i found that the most songs i had picked were in the genre of Pop, however i did look into other genres like R&B, Acoustic and Dance.

Audience Profile

We made a audience profile for our music artist that explains the characteristics of our audience, as see above we have explained who and what our audience members are like. For example the age of them, occupation , nationality, and interests. we have given a overall summary of what there like so you can understand who's going to be in our artists fan base.

Genre Research

I began research on genre types and i found that are so many different genre types put there, however not all of them suit the style i like and want to do my music video on. Even though this diagram doesn't show a lot of development as my own personal spider diagram, it does show a basic knowledge of all the genres.

Out of all the genres i most preffer Pop, R&B, Dance and Rap. These are the genres i personally listen to therefore making me want to base my music video around these genres.

Unit Brief

When centres choose briefs to offer to candidates, they should be guided by their strengths in terms of resources and expertise. Centres should also bear in mind the key areas: forms and conventions, production contexts, the role of technologies, audiences/users and representations.
The set briefs are as follows:

Print
Preliminary exercise: using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid-out text and a masthead. Additionally candidates must produce a DTP mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of the program.

Main task: the front page, contents and double page spread of a new music magazine (if done as a group task, each member of the group to produce an individual edition of the magazine, following the same house style). Maximum four members to a group.
All images and text used must be original, produced by the candidate(s), minimum of FOUR images per candidate.

Video

Preliminary exercise: Continuity task involving filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom she/he then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue. This task should demonstrate match on action, shot/reverse shot and the 180-degree rule.

Main task: the titles and opening of a new fiction film, to last a maximum of two minutes.
All video and audio material must be original, produced by the candidate(s), with the exception of music or audio effects from a copyright-free source. Both preliminary and main tasks may be done individually or as a group. Maximum four members to a group.

In all cases, candidates should be encouraged to see the evaluation as a creative task and the potential of the format chosen should be exploited through the use of images, audio, video and links to online resources. Marks should be supported by teacher comments and may be supported by other forms such as audio or video presentations.

In the evaluation the following seven questions must be addressed:

    • In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real
      media products?
    • How does your media product represent particular social groups?
    • What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
    • Who would be the audience for your media product?
    • How did you attract/address your audience?
  • What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
  • Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from
    it to the full product?

The production element and presentation of research and planning may be individual or group work (maximum group size is four candidates). Where candidates have worked in a group, the evidence for assessment may be presented collectively but centres will still assess candidates on an individual basis for their contribution to aspects of the work, from planning, research and production to evaluation.

G321 is marked and internally standardised by the centre and marks are submitted to OCR by a specified date, a sample is then selected for external moderation. The unit is marked out of a total of 100 marks: 20 marks for the presentation of the planning and research; 60 marks for the construction; 20 marks for the evaluation.
